FTR International Inc. is pleased to be a part of the US 245 million expansion project of the King AbdulAziz International Airport (KAIA)- Hajj Terminal. The General Aviation of Civil Authority (GACA) has expressed their objectives for this project to include the development of the KAIA to a hub airport and increase terminal capacity from 13 million to 21 million passengers. It is also intended to become the gateway to the holy cities of Makkah and Medina.
The project includes the construction of two new terminals, renovation of the main terminal, and the provision of 25 additional air bridges, three connector buildings that will serve both the international and domestic passengers, and an extensive upgrade of landside and airside infrastructure facilities.
The Hajj Terminal is estimated to be five million square feet, the world's second largest air terminal, next to Hong Kong International Airport's terminal. It sits in over 100ac (405,000m²) of ground area, and it is known for its tent-shaped roof. The Terminal 3's roof is made-up of a white colored PTFE-coated fiberglass membrane (one of the largest structures of its type in the world). This terminal has a mosque, and it can accommodate 80,000 travelers at the same time.
The project is progressing well with the full support of the government authorities. FTR became an integral part of the team, delivering our management consultancy services, during the Interim Phase. Just recently, the construction activities for Phase 1 have begun. The project is expected to be completed on September 2, 2008.
