This $12.7 million project was budgeted for the renovation and expansion of the City of Monterey Park’s 1959 public library. The first floor includes both adult and young adult sections, accessing the international reference collection, a technical services area, and main service points. The addition of a second floor features the children’s library, assembly spaces, adult literacy program facilities, and specialized staff areas. Project also included the construction of a subterranean parking structure. The project’s design incorporated a major re-organization of interior spaces to clarify circulation and efficiency throughout the entire building. A spine connecting the second floor service point to the main stair and reference service point on the first floor, restructured the use of interior space. The integrated surface treatments applied to this project were meant to appear compatible with the original 1950’s building while projecting an image of a new, 21st century library. FTR is highly competent in facilitating simultaneous construction renovation and expansion on existing buildings and considers structural renovation an important asset to sustainable construction practices and green building.|
