FTR International Inc.'s $50 Million Dollar Allied Health & Science Complex Awarded Top Honor as Winner in Higher Education
IRVINE, Calif., September 26, 2008 FTR International Inc. awarded Winner in Higher Education for the Allied Health & Science Center with Project of the Year honors from California Construction Magazine. The Los Angeles Valley College facility was announced a 'Best of 2008' selection. This is the third consecutive year for FTR to be awarded a top honor for our educational projects, winning the top award in the Higher Education category in 2007 for The Broad Stage at Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center and Project Manager of the Year in 2006 for Crozier Middle School in Inglewood, California.
California Construction Announces Best of 2008 Winners
Industry-leading construction publication honors state's top construction-design projects
SAN FRANCISCO, California Construction magazine is pleased to announce the winners of its Best of 2008 awards program.
The statewide competition annually recognizes construction and design excellence in Northern and Southern California.
An independent jury of industry experts in design and construction judged more than 140 nominated projects in a variety of categories. (...) The jury, which met in mid-September, awarded points to construction submissions based on criteria including project management, overcoming challenges of the job, overall excellence in architectural or engineering design, innovation, safety and the contribution to the community and/or the construction industry, among other criteria.

FTR International Inc. was listed as the 2008 Winner in Higher Education for the Allied Health & Science Building at Los Angeles Valley College. The 100,000 sq. ft. project facilitated the need for state-of-the-art laboratory systems, incorporating a greenhouse and botanical research area, administrative offices, computer workstations, classroom facilities, and auxiliary support spaces. The facility received Gold LEED Certification upon completion due to the extensive application of sustainable features FTR is accustomed to delivering, including:

HVAC Chilled-Beam technology, serving as a heating, ventilating, and air conditioning alternative to Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems
- Responsible use of materials involving local harvest, extraction, and recovery of building materials
- Use of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) approved post-consumer recycled materials
- Four integrated storm water retention ponds for utilization of natural resources concerning landscaping needs and irrigation maintenance
- Structural photovoltaic (solar) panel canopy generates energy on-site, while active architectural strategies utilize natural light minimizing the need for electrical light sources
- Strict waste management policies implemented by FTR utilized local recycle centers and exceeded LEED required diversion percentages
